Fmovies

For years FMovies was the busiest pirate streaming network on the planet. In 2024 police in Hanoi switched it off. This is what F Movies was, how it fell, and where to watch legally now.

The background

The site that outgrew everyone

FMovies launched in 2016 from Hanoi, Vietnam, and spent the next eight years becoming the largest unlicensed streaming operation in the world. Its pitch was familiar from older sites like 123movies, but bigger and more polished: a huge library of films and TV, fast playback in the browser, no account needed, and frequent new uploads.

Like its predecessors, the site hopped between addresses as blocks landed. FMovies.to was the best-known domain for years, with later versions such as fmovies24 picking up most of the traffic near the end. Fans followed each move, and many still search for F Movies by those old addresses today.

None of the catalog was licensed. Studios and the people who made the films and series were never paid, while the operators earned money from advertising. The U.S. Trade Representative listed FMovies as a notorious market every year from 2017 to 2023.

The network

FMovies was never just one website

Behind the FMovies brand sat a family of sister sites run by the same group, plus a video-hosting service that fed streams not only to its own sites but to hundreds of unrelated pirate sites as well.

The takedown

How the FMovies network went dark

July 2024

Users start reporting that FMovies and related sites are failing to load, and the outages spread over the following weeks.

August 29, 2024

The Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment, whose members include Netflix, Disney, Amazon and Apple, announces it worked with Hanoi police to shut the network down. Two men are arrested.

The aftermath

The video host behind the network is taken offline too, knocking out streams on hundreds of other pirate sites that depended on it.

Investigators said the FMovies sites drew more than 6.7 billion visits between January 2023 and June 2024, averaging roughly 374 million a month, which is why the industry called it the largest piracy ring ever taken down.

Watch out

Why FMovies still shows up in search

The name is valuable, so copycats grabbed it within days. Sites using FMovies, F Movies or FMovies.to-style addresses today have no link to the original team and are run by people nobody can hold accountable.

They typically make money from aggressive ads: instant pop-ups, fake play and download buttons, prompts to install a “player” or extension, and redirects to scam or gambling pages. Those are some of the most common ways people end up with malware or handing card details to fraudsters. Streaming unlicensed copies can also carry legal risk depending on where you live.
